Postcards for Solidarity
Iman Tajik, 2020
Postcards for Solidarity is a collaborative online artwork by Iman Tajik, commissioned by Interfaith Scotland during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. Conceived at a time when connection was fractured by lockdowns, the project created a space for people to share experiences of isolation while building a sense of collective support.
Tajik invited participants from across the world to contribute self-portraits of their hands alongside short written reflections on life during the pandemic. To guide this process, he collaborated with writer Loll Jung to deliver workshops in photography and creative writing, offering tools for participants to express their thoughts, fears, grief, and hopes.
These contributions were curated into an online exhibition and also transformed into a system of exchange: each participant received a postcard carrying the image and words of another contributor. This act of exchange—between strangers who might never otherwise meet—became a gesture of solidarity and mutual recognition.
The project underscores Tajik’s ongoing interest in borders, belonging, and communication across difference. Here, the simple motif of the postcard becomes both artwork and message, extending beyond digital space into something tangible. Through this act, Postcards for Solidarity affirms shared humanity, while acknowledging the varied realities of loss, isolation, resilience, and hope.
