Iman Tajik, 2021
Bordered Miles is a multidisciplinary project by Iman Tajik, combining performance, photography, and video to explore themes of migration, borders, and bodily movement. Commissioned for Glasgow International 2021, the work culminated in a day-long, live-streamed group walk from Glasgow city centre to Dungavel House Immigration Removal Centre, approximately 26 miles south of the city.
An extension of Tajik’s ongoing interest in creating work for the public realm, the walk invited participants, both physically and virtually, to pay close attention to the movement of bodies as a natural right. The project emphasises how bodily movement is crossed or constrained by multiple borders, both visible and invisible, and highlights the ways socio-political divisions affect some far more than others.
The walk concluded as participants arrived at the Immigration Removal Centre to raise and fly a flag made by Tajik from an emergency safety blanket, symbolising the reclamation of political space and the assertion of freedom of movement.
Tajik repeated the walk during his exhibition at the Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow, extending the project’s reach and engaging new audiences.
Bordered Miles was co-developed in partnership with Deveron Projects, project-managed by Natalie Nicolaides, and supported by Creative Scotland, Glasgow International, Hope Scott Trust, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Maryhill Community Centre, Scottish Detainee Visitors, and Glasgow Action.
The project was also awarded the Glasgow International 2020 Graduate Bursary. Related works from the project were exhibited as part of Glasgow International and in galleries including Listen Gallery, Glasgow.
